The Master's Design of Discipleship Part 1 and 2
Sermon Series: The Master's Design of Discipleship
Sermon Title: The Call of the Disciple
Sermon Text: Matthew 4:18-22
I. The Call of the Disciple
GREEK: 1. DEUTE, DEURO -
come now, follow urgently
2. MANTHETES, MANTHANO - learner, pupil, to increase in
knowledge by practice and use
A. To Follow Matthew 4:1
B. To Learn Matthew 5:1-2
C. To
Know John 10:14, 14:9
10:14 “I am the
good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me
14:9 Jesus
answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a
long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show
us the Father’?
II. The Characteristics of the Disciple
The Disciple:
A.
Settles the Matter of Lordship
Luke 9:23, Romans 10:9
23 Then he
said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take
up his cross daily and follow me.
B.
Desires to be Obedient Luke 6:46
46 “Why do
you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?
C.
Commits to Persist/Endure
Matthew 10:22, Rev 2:26
22 All men
will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.
D.
Adopts the Posture of a Learner
Matthew 11:29
28 “Come to
me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take
my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and
you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my
burden is light.”
E.
Practices the Habits of the Master
- prays to the Father - Luke 5:16 But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.
- studies and loves the word -
Matthew 4:4 Man does not live on bread alone...
- desires the will of the Father -
Luke 22:42 "Not my will but
thine."
- has compassion for the crowds and
the lost - Matt 9:36, 14:14
9:36 When he
saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and
helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
- embraces the necessity of Servanthood Matthew 20:26-28
26 Not so
with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your
servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28
just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to
give his life as a ransom for many.”
